We received “the call” that changed our lives forever. Amanda from CCAI called to tell us that we were the proud parents of a beautiful baby girl. A few minutes later she sent an email with Little HaiYan’s picture. We opened it and our hearts leapt from our chests.
We were so head-over-heels in love with our daughter.
Head.Over.Heels. Totally. Completely. Unapologetically in love with our daughter. And all we had was a tiny picture. I think we stared at that picture until our eyes burned a hole in it. We tried to memorize every inch of those oh-so-pinchable chubby cheeks and those sweet little rosebud lips.
Luckily, the UPS man delivered two more photographs bright and early the next morning. Two more links to our daughter who was half way around the world. She had already stolen our hearts.
It’s hard to believe that four years have passed since that day. My little chubby-cheeked baby is almost five years old. Thank goodness that she still has those chubby cheeks. She still has our hearts, too.
Molly Michelle HaiYan, you are the most amazingly wonderful child. You live life loud and take what you want. You bring sunshine to everyday. We hope that we can spend not only the next four years continuing to stare at your beautiful face, but the next forty!
…of course we’d be really, really old and you would still have to live at home as a 45 year old woman so that we could do it, but that’s our wish!
This morning at breakfast Molly and I watched the video of our referral phone call. She is finally at an age where she has enough grasp of language and behavior to understand what was going on.
She beamed as we gushed over every little detail that we found out about her during that call. She laughed at me as I bawled through the entire thing. Both in the video and sitting next to her watching the video.
Later in the day we had an impromptu photo shoot with her referral pictures:
And the tummy pose.Cute then and cute still!
Funny thing--when we got our referral call four years ago, we were in the middle of an ice storm. And today? Another ice storm. Here are some pictures for all of you who are lucky enough to be someplace sunny!
Beautiful and miserable all at the same time!
Stay warm today and, if you have kids, remember just how lucky you are that God allowed you to be their parents. That’s what we are going to do today!
